Fleshies-Brown Flag LP (w/Free cd)!

Friday, November 20th, 2009

About time Recess released something on time! And what a whopper to end the streak with! Brown Flag is, without any dubious crap, my favorite Fleshies record. I know i have said that about bands once they do something on Recess but it’s not like i lie or something. It is sooo solid and even better, it feels like they wanted to make this record a long time ago. A huge break, with the guys taking on other bands/projects might have had something to do with this. Regardless of what i think, we have 500 brown (hard as hell to get according to our pressing plant) vinyl copies for your picky ass.

The “Shut Up And Buy” Link

Lets get a quote from the talent:
“keep in mind that this is the closest Fleshies can get to writing a genuine
pop rock record and we are damn proud of it. it is a true reflection
of a decade of love between five men with all of the requisite ups and
downs that implies. life gets complicated and we are just trying to
make sense of it. but we are talking about family here, ya know?” -John Geek

track listing
1) Aphids
2) Onion of My Eye
3) Over The Raindro
4) Fire It Up
5) The Chip
6) Now She is a Cop
7) Grounded
8) Finger in the Sky
9) Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight
10) You Can Be A Star

Japanther-Skuffed Up My Huffy LP!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

One of my favorite Japanther releases sees vinyl! Let’s do this!

Japanther are two punk-rock dudes from Brooklyn, banging on drums, abusing guitars, singing through pay-phone receivers, cutting up distorted tape loops and dumb samples — they make it all seem so easy. Their sound is a scruffy mess, turning their three-chord surf-guitar riffs and organ squalls into surprisingly catchy rock slop. Japanther took a huge leap on 2005’sWolfenswan, with the Beach Boys goof “I-10″ and the Rolling Stones piano loop “Full Cup.” But they make even merrier noise here, souping up their beatbox to sound like Tommy Ramone. “Mornings” and “Summer of ‘79″ are fast, mean, oddly poignant odes to driving around. “River Phoenix” is a sincere elegy for a dead movie star (”Joaquin, What happened/I thought he was vegan”), while “$100 Cover” samples riot-grrrl chants into a cry for the revolution. If Buddy Holly were young, wired, pissed at his landlord and unable to play guitar, he might sound like “Challenge.” At thirteen songs, it’s all over in twenty-six minutes — but what a glorious ride. —Review from Rolling Stone (really)

Screeching Weasel-My Brain Hurts LP out now!

SCREECHING WEASEL “My Brain Hurts” Gatefold LP (Recess#117)

Part 2 of the Screeching Weasel vinyl preservation effort is my favorite Lookout release. I realize that is a very bold statement considering their catalog housed many amazing releases by The Queers, Green Day, Operation Ivy, Pinhead Gunpowder, Crimpshrine and, of course, the Blatz/Filth split. But My Brain Hurts is that special. I always felt that Screeching Weasel found more in common with The Dickies than The Ramones, and this record is why. Ben Weasel had songwriting talent before this record, but this, I suspect, is the record where he actually realized that himself, without taking the whole thing too seriously. Punk and Rock n Roll are inherently stupid. That’s what makes it sooo good. Although there is plenty of that here, there are also some of the most intelligent lyrics, as well as intelligent hooks. For proof, listen to 3 consecutive songs “Science of Myth”, “What We Hate”, and “Teenage Freakshow”.  It gives me goosebumps to think that the band themselves prolly thought they were just making a stupid punk rock record.

“My Brain Hurts” was originally released in 1991 on Lookout Records and is considered by many to be one of the best Screeching Weasel albums. Now re-issued on four different kinds of colored vinyl, 500 of each color! (Clear, White, Orange, & Pink!) Gatefold cover has all-new artwork by Cristy Road.

NOTE! If you order multiple copies you will get different colors if available. If you have a preference you can email me. FIRST 50 ORDERS GET A SCREECHING WEASEL POSTER!!

Audacity-Power Drowning LP out now!

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Audacity-Power Drowning LP white vinyl

I saw these guys on a boat and thought they were the best band i have seen while skimming on the Pacific ocean! From the first few chords they reminded me of Jerrys Kids. Like very early Jerrys Kids,as well as a slew of other early ’80’s hardcore bands, but within 1 minute into a song everything changed and i thought “Now they sound like The Bananas!”. Yea i put a quote on thoughts. so what?! They even do “Dicks Hate Police”. Split release with Burger Records!
