Recess#114  Pinhead Gunpowder-s/t 7″ (500 Blue-500 Green)Aaron Cometbus asked me to do some low-key shows for Pinhead Gunpowder in San Pedro back in Feb. Although they ended up not being so low key, there was a spirit about the shows that tugged on the locals’ intimate sides. Sides you’re lucky enough to see once in a lifetime. Tough wrestle boys singin’ like birds, bad drunks bein’ sincere, drama queens leaving their crowns at home, etc. Sometime during the weekend, they asked me to do a record of their new material. Some of my favorite songs by Pinhead Gunpowder to date! Here it is! First release in about 8 years!

Thee Makeout Party-Play Pretend LP
I’ve always been attracted to OC punk, although in its supposed “hey day” there was some pretty retarded shit goin on. In 1986 I remember speed walking outta Fenders Ballroom while D.I. was playing cos i saw some dude with a knife dangling from his back and didnt go to any shows for a year or so. Although it wasnt D.I.’s fault and i actually loved the other OC bands at the time, i feel better about whats goin on in Orange County nowadays. Bands like Pterodacdudes, Audacity, Drinkers Purgatory, and Thee Makeout Party sound nothing like each other but share something that i aint even gonna try to explain on the internet! Thee’s sound is not unlike the great power-pop that was unleashed by labels like Stiff Records (Wreckless Eric, Nick Lowe) and Posh Boy (Red Cross, The Simpletones) awhile back. This is Thee’s debut LP! CD released by Teenacide

Thee Makeout Party is on tour with Audacity right now! Click on their myspace link to see dates!

The Bananas-New Animals LP/CD
My band was on tour with The Bananas once and at one show they were pushed to do a sound check. I was eating in another room downstairs when i heard them start. All of the sudden i caught myself wolfing down my food very fast like i was in a hot dog eating contest. The reason was cos it sounded like i was missing a huge fun party. When i finished i ran into the room they were playing and it was empty, like most sound checks are. Even from a faint thump street blocks away they have a spirit and energy that many other bands will never come close to even pretending to have. Their first 3 albums are mainstays in my stereo and never seem to lose charm or fail the test of time. Their 4th album, “New Animals”, promises even more longevity! Some of their best songs like “Gentrification for Dummies”, “Radioaction”, “National Anthem”, and “Roly Poly” call this record home. Damn I’m glad they exist!
Also they are on tour most of may. click on their link on the right to see dates!

(((Work jakets)))
We got in some real nice and used work jackets for Off With Their Heads, Recess, & Underground Railroad to Candyland.

Screeching Weasel- Boogadaboogadaboogada LP $10 Gatefold Jacket!
Recess is currently going through high emotions due to the grantage of releasing most of Screeching Weasel’s catalog on vinyl. The first installment is the classic second album Boogadaboogadaboogada. Originally released on Roadkill Records, then bootlegged in europe, and then re-released on Lookout Records, and now on an updated mastered, deluxe packaged Recess version. This album is reminiscent of the better A.O.D. Stuff, yet has the sign-of-things-to-come classics like “Love”, “Stupid Over You”, “My Right”, “I Wanna Be Naked”, and the great great “Hey Suburbia”. 26 songs in all!! If you paid attention to punk or HC in the late ’80’s then this was considered a savior!
First 500 on multi-colored vinyl.

The Queers-Love Songs For The Retarded LP $8
As with all the Lookout era Screeching Weasel being re-released on the unbowed vinyl format, same goes for The Queers! The first in the installment is their highly classic “Love Songs For The Retarded” LP. I pretty much think all the songs on this album are glued forever onto The Queers set lists. With greats like “Debra Jean”, “Hi Mom.it’s Me”, & “You’re Tripping” you can’t ever ever ever go wrong.
First 500 on multi-colored vinyl.

OFF WITH THEIR HEADS-Hospitals LP $8
First 500 on multi-colored vinyl
OFF WITH THEIR HEADS has stepped up to the plate and delivered a record that rocks with the passion of a thousand Alamo house basement shows. Imagine a stronger MODERN MACHINES,mixed with some DILLINGER FOUR, and then throw in a healthy dose of RIVETHEAD (which this band is ex members of) and you have OFF WITH THEIR HEADS. There is something wonderful and totally punk about jumping up and down while singing songs about misery and sorrow with a smile on your face. This record is so recommended that I can almost guarantee will be on my year-end top ten and its only march.-J. Floyd/ MRR
